We are happy to once again welcome David Drebin to Sweden, this time at the gallery in Stockholm.
The exhibition will introduce the latest Diamond Dust works as well as the new book Flirting with Danger
by the internationally renowned and New York City-based photographer and multidisciplinary artist.
David Drebin’s mysterious and suspenseful images seem like snapshots from a film. Looking closer you
find a carefully crafted artwork flirting with the imagination of the viewer. They are not just pictures,
they are stories waiting to unfold.
The Diamond Dust works are photographs covered with a glittering material added to paper and ink in
the printing process, establishing a radiant finish which captures light alluringly and enhances the value
and beauty of the prints.
Drebin’s new book Flirting with Danger, published by teNeues Verlag, is an extra-large format monograph.
This high-gloss publication takes Drebin’s storytelling to the next level by exploring the fascinating riddle
of the forbidden and the allure of danger.
David Drebin’s photographs are epic and dramatic. In a unique and opulent way he stages femme fatales against the panorama of the big cities, which serve as cinematic settings. The artist is celebrated for creating spectacular shots of dazzling subjects including photographs that tell a tale, voyeuristic scenes with people and dream-like city landscapes that evoke emotions, psychological perspectives and insightful reflections into the viewers’ own imagination and experiences.
New York City-based photographer and multidisciplinary artist David Drebin was born in Toronto, Canada in 1970. After graduation from Parsons School of Design in New York City in 1996 he rapidly made a name for himself as an internationally renowned photographer creating images of movie stars, athletes, and various entertainers. Subsequently he was commissioned for countless high profile advertising campaigns around the world.
In 2005, Drebin had his first solo exhibition at Camera Work in Berlin which was followed by his first comprehensive illustrated book entitled “Love and Other Stories” in 2007. This signaled the transformation from commercial photographer into art photographer represented worldwide by some of the finest art galleries. In 2010 he participated in an exhibition at Fotografiska museum in Stockholm.
In collaboration with teNeues publishing, David Drebin has released several books distributed worldwide. Among them, "Before They Were Famous” where he not only offers an intimate and original look at now world-famous celebrities like Charlize Theron, John Legend and Steve Jobs before they were famous, but also shares his own career beginnings presenting images before they were sold out.
Drebin’s latest book “Flirting with Danger” is an extra-large format monograph that allows the images to achieve maximum impact. This new high-gloss publication featuring Drebin’s most daring photographs takes Drebin’s storytelling to the next level.
Over the years, Drebin's filmic signature style has evolved into other art forms including lightboxes, neon installations, etching on crystal starfire glass and most recently, the revolutionary “photo sculpture” where he transforms his iconic muses and femme fatales into breathtaking high-definition 3D art masterpieces.
”His photographs make me dream and I fill in my heart the script for the narrative they evoke. In painting as in photography I have always had a particular fascination for artists who were able to skilfully render the world of the night.”
Simon de Pury, Swiss Art Auctioneer and Collector. From the introduction of the book ”Before they were famous”.
